A Big Step

This morning, Jake left to work very early. I'm not a great wife, so I didn't get up with him and fix him a big breakfast like I usually do. (Yeah, right. The are packets of oatmeal in the pantry, help yourself!) I woke to the sound of Brooklyn and Ty creeping downstairs. The overcast day had me feeling particularly lazy, and I'm by nature not great in the morning, so I decided to wait it out. As quiet as they were being, I knew they were amid a great project. I could hear bits and pieces, and figured out that they were downstairs getting themselves breakfast. I relished in listening to them accomplish a big task together, and didn't go down for a few minutes. I was honestly surprised that they had done fairly well. Both had cereal. No milk was spilled. Brooklyn had also gotten into the freezer and toasted some waffles. She had carefully and lovingly cut Ty's for him and gave him syrup. I have to admit, I expected the worst...cereal all over the floor, milk spilled down the heater vents (again, it's been done!) and sticky syrup all over. The only major mess was Ty's cereal bowl (it was serious kinds of overfull) and that the kids had found some Gatorade mix and tried to make themselves some. The cups were half concentrate and half water, and hadn't been touched. So yucky. I love babies, I love everything about them. But, I am also loving my kids growing up and gaining some independence. It's amazing. It's serious seperation anxiety for me if I dwell on it too much, but it's wonderful! Now, if I can just help them learn to get Sadie out of bed without serious injury...I'd be able to sleep in every morning, right? Maybe they would have MY breakfast too, just waiting.

A More Personal Glimpse

I've noticed lately a tag where people post a picture of their real life messes. While I wasn't able to get a good picture, Brooklyn "helped" me this week. She was working in the dining room on a craft project. When I walked in, there were several spots on the floor with an excessive amount of tape. She was proud to explain that she had taped down a ladybug and "some yucky food that fell on the floor and melted" so that "the babies, Ty and Sadie" wouldn't be able to get them. Innovations in cleanliness, huh? Forget cleaning up, just tape it down so no one can eat it. Scotchiclean! I could do an infomercial. So gross!

Cowboys Herding Cats

I feel like a "cat herder" anytime I take my kids out in public. This clip inspires me to be more fulfilled by my job. "Ain't lost one yet" Knock on wood.

Spring Has Sprung!

Whew! Spring is officially here, I think. Mind you, spring in Wisconsin does not mean it's yet time to put away winter clothes or the snowblower; but I think it may mean that it won't be below zero again for a few months. Today, for the biggest holiday of the year (in Milwaukee) we're supposed to get up to 70 degrees. Those people who were lined up this morning at 9:30am at Mo's Irish Pub looked grateful for the warm weather. (Yes, I'm serious, and I understand that the true partiers were getting started at 6:00am when the bars downtown opened.) I don't know...maybe these folks have just been partying non-stop since Saturday with the St. Paddy's parade and stuff. I'm a Mormon stay-at-home mom. The party is always here, so I don't have to pub crawl to find it.

Happy Birthday My Little Man

Ty's birthday was several weeks ago, I have wanted to talk a bit about Ty, but wanted to wait until I had some things to write about him...here's to you T-Bone!
A few of my favorite things about Ty:
1. He is 100% boy. This is so foreign to me, having grown up in a house with 3 girls. But, it is so refreshing. He loves all things messy and his favorite hobby is teasing his sisters
2. I love that he and Brooklyn are best friends (and sometimes the worst of friends)
3. I am so happy that he still likes to give Mommy "wugs" (loves, hugs) and cuddle time.
4. Your sense of humor is off the charts, so funny. I love the fact that he has this ability to draw people in, kids and adults alike, but really has no idea that he is "Mr Popular".
5. One of the cutest things you do is sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"..."woot, woot, woot, for da Bwewas (Brewers)"
6. Most of the time, he makes an extra effort to be kind...although again, his favorite hobby is teasing and he's really good at pushing Brooklyn's buttons.
7. I think it's cute that you can't jump, and lack coodination in running, walking, dancing, etc. in general.
8. I love how he waves his arms and wiggles his fingers when he is excited...no poker face here.
9. His fascination with tractors, trains, backhoes, excavators, skid steers, fire engines, fire trucks, and all things little boy keeps me on my toes.
10. His interest in animals reminds me of myself as a child and it's fun to share that love by going to the zoo and looking for animals on our walks.
LOVE YOU T-BONE TY CIRCLE MUD COW FIRETRUCK COW MORTON (Ty's self proclaimed nick-name)

I AM - Nichole Nordeman

My sister in law had this posted on her blog. It is amazingly inspiring and really reflects how I have been feeling this weekend. Life is rough sometimes, we all hang in the balance while trying to take care of life's demands, while still staying focused on the Lord, it's easy to get distracted.

Lose, Lose

I swear, every time I go to my pediatrician, I come home thinking that I should be in med school so I don't feel like a complete fool every time I take my kids in...the entire experience is just a lose, lose situation.
For starters, there is no way on earth to time your arrival so you don't have to wait. Believe me, I hate waiting in a doctors office with my kids; a place where you are likely to leave with a bug more fun than the one that brought you in. But I've found that regardless of whether I show up early, on time, or a few minutes late; I get the pleasure of watching my kids for 10-15 minutes play with germ infested toys while I watch some awful, boring CNN health show and try to read parenting and pregnancy magazines. Honestly, couldn't they come up with some funner reading? I figure this would be time better spent in a magazine that I wouldn't ever subscribe to, but would love to browse. Eye candy, so to speak. I would rather read about celeb gossip and new fashion trends for spring; than ear infections and how to stop tantrums...am I alone on this one?
The other thing that drives me nuts is that you can't win with taking your kids into the doctor in general. For example, when Brooklyn was a baby, I was seriously in the doctor at least once a month...every run of the mill bug that hit our house, every time she was cranky, every time I was cranky; we went running to the doctor. My kind doctor alway assured me all was fine, "it's just a virus...we're seeing a lot of this in our office...blah, blah, blah". I always left feeling like my time and his had been wasted.
Now, I'm much less inclined to go into the doctor until I need to. When Sadie ended up hospitalized a few months ago, she had been sick all week with a stomach bug. I had been in contact with a doctor over the phone throughout the week, but had been reassured that it wasn't worth getting her in. When I admitted her to the ER, one of the first questions was, "how long has she been sick? why didn't you bring her in earlier?"...Well, do you really want to know? I didn't bring her in earlier because I would have been dragging a sick kid out of the house to go to the doctor and have him tell me we have a run of the mill virus that everyone has...start feeling her clear fluids and then move to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast...for those not well versed in GI infections).
Then TODAY, I took Ty in for his 3-year check. While he is acting fine and all went well, his throat was a "little" red and his ear was a "little" pink. Nothing that requires antibiotics or any other treatment, yet my doc implied that I should have brought him in...grrr. Are you serious? Had I brought him in because he was "sick"....seriously...you would have told me that there was nothing I could do, he's just got a cold! It's a good thing that I don't really base the way I feel about my mothering on what my pediatrician thinks!
