Haircuts!

Cutting off those adorable curls.  The heartbreak...
This was WAY back last August.  All of the kids were looking a little (or a lot) shaggy, so we headed to get everyone back-to-school haircuts.  Jackson got his "first" haircut on this monumental day.  Based on experience and a number of bad haircuts, we've learned that it's less expensive (on both the pocketbook and my emotions) to go to a salon that just cuts kids hair.  The kids think its an outing.

Northwoods Vacation 2011

I love those movies that you can find on TV and just start watching at any point and you don't have to watch it, but you can watch it, and just having it on keeps you company.  I'm sitting here watching TV and blogging...My blog is lately one more thing to feel guilty about.  The fact that I am so behind keeps me from even trying to catch up.  Blah.  Here are A LOT of pictures (probably too many) of our Northwoods vacation last summer.  A-MAZE-ING.  Comparing one vacation to another is hard.  However, if I had to rate this vacation over others, it would be awarded "most relaxing".  We stayed with three other families in a lakeside home.  We enjoyed our own private beach and dock.  The kids had a paddleboat, a canoe, a ski boat, a sailboat, and several other floating devices to keep them busy.   They spent a lot of time sitting and playing in the sand, as well as the very shallow water off of the beach.  With nothing but a gas station for shopping and no T.V. to speak of, it's wonderful to just slow down and chillax.

This is a picture of one of our friends "towing" a tube behind the paddleboat.
The one and only adorable little Jack admiring a frog.

Me (open your eyes) and my friend Heather chillin' lakeside.

Did I mention we loved the sand?

Wait.  I'm missing one!

My kids are jaded fishermen.  I grew up sitting on the side of a lake.  Fishing and waiting.  And waiting.  And waiting.  Fishing off of the dock here, we could barely keep baits on hooks and get fish off of hooks fast enough.  You're actually happy when the fish works himself off.

T-Bone

Playing on the tube.  If I recall, the was some kind of "king of the mountain" style game going on here.

A friend found this great "museum".  It was an old steam engine.  We rode the engine from the "station" to a small town where the kids fed farm animals, pet icky kittens, and toured a logging museum.  Very off the beaten path.  Very unregulated.  Very, very fun.

These darling men were the engineers.  The one I remember (still) was named Salty.  I think they have their dream jobs.

Like I said, the "museum" was pretty unregulated, no rules kind of a place.  The kids had fun playing on the train tracks.  (What kind of parents are we?)

Kiddos had fun in the petting zoo.  Poor Sadie later got bitten by a pony.  She didn't feed ANY animals after that.

Back at the lake.

Oops.  Got a couple of dorks back at the train.

A few of us...not sure where the rest of us were...

Ty loves to do "tricks" when her waterskis.  It is truly amazing that he doesn't wipe out.  Goofy kid.  It's so much fun as a parent to watch.

Judging by the lack of wake, that sign is a big thumbs down for "SLOW DOWN DAD!"

Anyways, sorry about having so many pictures.  Good times.  Good memories.  Come join us sometime.  It's like living in an LL Bean catalog for  week.

Summer 2011

During June and July, Brooklyn and Tyler took at art class.  They came home with so many fabulous projects, it inspired me to come up with a way to display my kids art (other than the fridge).  I hung a curtain rod in the playroom in the basement.  The drapery clips are perfect for holding artwork.

Last summer, we made it to a few Brewers games.  Milwaukee has made Brewers fans of us.  Our kids love to do the chicken dance and by next year they'll have the words to "Roll Out the Barrel" down.  The Sausage Races are a huge highlight of the game, and we're working on learning more about the game and spending time watching baseball instead of wandering the concourse scouting for snacks and playing on the playground.

In August, Grandma and Grandpa Morton came for  a visit.  We took them out on the lake to watch the kids ski.  Later, we launched in Lake Michigan and took them for a boat ride in the Milwaukee River.  We stopped at the mall for lunch and ended our boat ride at Discovery World.

Grandma and Grandpa were then headed to Minneapolis for a baby blessing.  They wanted to ride Amtrak and offered to take our three older kids.  We accepted their offer and bought tickets before they had time to think things through and change their mind.  I think all went well and the kids were superbly well behaved (sometimes, grandparents tell lies).  My in-laws are fabulously good sports.  My kids made memories they'll always remember.

We "saved" my in-laws the next day in Minneapolis.  We met up at the Mall of America and spent the weekend with Jake's brother and his family for a baby blessing.  I somehow am missing any pictures of the aforementioned sweet baby.  Funny how at great, fun, big family gatherings, I never manage to get pictures to capture the fun.

Random picture of the butterfly exhibit at the zoo.  We spend a lot of time at our zoo.

Haha.  Here's what happens when you leave out peanut butter and jelly with Jack around.  I probably shouldn't laugh and take pictures when he does stuff like this.  Perhaps he'd be more well-behaved if I didn't think he was so stinking cute.

400th Post! Boating Finale.

We spent a lot of time on our boat this summer.  Readers may be bored with more boating pictures.  Being that today is a cold, snowy day, I decided to lump all of the "rest" of the pictures together for one post.  Bear with me.

One of the best parts of last summer was that we spent a lot of time together.  A lot of time in a relatively small space.  For the most part, we all got along...as long as there was a steady supply of snacks.
Jack wasn't big on getting IN the water, but he made a decent skipper.  On this trip, we had to try to keep one foot dry (he punctured it and had stitches in his foot).

The kids LOVED being able to "surf" behind our friend's boat.
Yeah, that's me.  I learned to wakeboard.  I loved to wakeboard.  I still feel like I'm always on the edge of disaster on waterskis.  I had a lot of disaster shooting up my nose when I learned to wakeboard, but near the end I was starting to feel a little confident.

Brooklyn and Sam waterskiing TOGETHER.  I wish I'd caught a shot of when they were holding hands.  So.  Cute.
 THE WHOLE CREW!!!
That's me.  With Ty.  Good mom moment.

So, so behind

In the past year, with three kids in school (at least for part of the day), I've finally been able to catch up a bit on my life and the mess I've made over the past 7 years since Brooklyn was born.  My house is reasonably clean, everyone has clean underwear (I hope they're wearing it!), my stacks and stacks of "to do" papers to read, file, etc (think the old comic "Cathy") are gone.  The lone remaining item on my "to do" list is "update blog".  I honestly have been avoiding it.  Where am I to start?  I don't want to miss recording all that I haven't blogged about, but diving into a big "catch up" project is less appealing that cleaning the bathroom.  So, here's a start.  I have been journaling tidbits on my phone...just so my children's lives are not forgotten.  Here are some entries from last month:

Tuesday, January 31
I used an elevator marked "handicap access only". I figured that a mom alone with four kids fits within those guidelines.

Today, Jack hid in bedroom and was fake sleeping in Ty's bed.  He makes these cute little snoring sounds and loves having me find him.

Ty cried when I told him "the truth" about Groundhogs Day.  He was so confused about multiple groundhogs, how groundhogs see their shadow, how they know whether they saw their shadow, and how they control the weather based on what they see.

Jack said "bless you" when I sneezed

Thursday, February 2
Things I do for my kids...stood outside for 30 minutes with Jack and Sadie to wait for "Wynter" the groundhog at the zoo.  Brooklyn was in tears earlier in the day about not seeing it because of school, so I went to film it for her.  Apparently, it's not usually a huge event but it was packed.  Met someone doing second groundhog.  He got up at 4am to see the first groundhog.  Wynter predicted an early spring.

Brooklyn is annoyingly confident about being right and keeps talking about "PHuxatony Phil" (with a ph combo making an "F" sound, rather than just a "p".  Correction just makes it worse and she says it more.

Friday, February 3
I found a bulb coming up in my yard today.  Super early for Wisconsin.  Fingers crossed.

Sunday, February 5
Ty: "Brooklyn is trying to take away my agency!"

My baby turns two. Mixed feelings.  Surreal.  Sad.  Relieved.  Optimistic.

Tuesday, February 7
Jack was walking around the kitchen poking everyone with a straw he was holding in his mouth.  When I took it away to avoid a self-inflicted tonsillectomy, Jake asked me if I was tired.  He pointed out I was too tired to see how cute/funny Jack was being.  What else do I miss?

Thursday, February 9
If you're thinking of buying self assemble valentines at the dollar store, don't.

Jack's 2-year well children doctor visit.  All is well, except his "baba" (pacifier).  He only takes it at night.  The pediatrician wants it gone.  The dentist told me a few weeks ago he can have it until he's three.  Doctor vs. dentist...Jack and I side with the dentist in the jaw department.

Friday, February 10
Good mom moment yesterday--Brooklyn was at girl scouts.  I was in the dining room with the other kids.  Jack was happily coloring a picture while sitting in his high chair.  I was simultaneously making a paper chain of hearts for valentines day , while walking Ty and Sadie through a game of Battleship.  No fighting.  No crying.  Joy.

Mothering bliss was lost walking to car from school in 20 degree weather (plus wind, plus snow)

Monday, February 13
Jack fell asleep in the car on the way home from a playdate.  We are sitting in the driveway.  Sadie is playing Leapster, I'm using my phone.  Guilt-free screen time...on the heels of a fun outing.

Tuesday, February 14
When the kids came home from school to sort their valentines, I warned them to be careful as to where they open them; and to not leave them where Jack could find them.  Only a few minutes later, Ty left the table and his stash.  Jack climbed onto the table, rifled through the candy, chose a few, and stuffed them down his shirt.  Then he ran.

Wednesday, February 15
How is it that a baby truly knows when you are down to the last diaper--having pillaged the house, the church bag, and the car?  Manages to go through four times the normal amount of diaper changes, forcing a trip to the store in the aforementioned "last" diaper.

Ty:  "Daddy is taller than Mommy, and Mommy is HUGE!"

Sunday, February 19
Sadie cried at church today.  Her primary teacher wasn't there.  Apparently, not only had Sadie drawn a picture for her, but she had picked out an outfit based on her teachers supposed favorite colors.  She was crushed.

Tuesday, February 21
Brooklyn: "Mom, were you a kid in 1865?"  She asked me in the last 5 minutes of a super hard workout routine...I was feeling old, but not that old.

Brooklyn learned about the Civil War at school.  She came home happy that Lincoln had helped the north win the war.  She was sure that Utah had been a "southern" state, and that if we'd lost the war, she wouldn't be able to see her grandparents in Utah.

Sunday, February 26
Jack loves boxes.  Cake mix boxes, macaroni boxes, shoe boxes.  Begs for them and then runs around the house with them, carrying cars and shaking the box.

Tuesday, February 28
Today I was cleaning, getting ready for someone to come over to my house.  I vacuumed the living room, then went into the bathroom to wipe it down.  When I came back into the living room, Jack had opened the vacuum, taken out the vacuum bag, and was proceeding to dump the contents all over the floor.

Jack eats PB&J sandwiches inside out.  Eats only insides, leaves the bread on his plate.

Pilgrims

Today, Tyler was talking about the pilgrims.  Kindergarten has brought all kinds of interesting pilgrim trivia to our home...the name of the ship, the number of days that they traveled, and apparently, the living conditions aboard   On the way home from school, Ty said "Mom, I really think I would like to be a pilgrim.  Except, I'd like it to not be crowded on the ship.  I'd like good food and lots of it.  I would want a nice comfortable bed to sleep on.  I think I'd like a refrigerator too....AND, I'd only want to go for 2 days, not 2 months and 3 days".

I think that even a DISNEY Cruise is longer than 2 days.  So much for a spirit of adventure.
